Plan for delays on I-90 from North Bend to Ellensburg for summer construction – What’s next?

What’s been done so far?

Over the next several years, WSDOT and contractor crews will be working on more than two dozen projects of varying sizes between North Bend and Vantage. This work continues to address deteriorating lanes and bridge decks as well as build new lanes and bridges. Travelers will experience delays due to shoulder and lane closures, traffic shifts and possible detours.

I-90 Vantage Bridge Deck Replacement

One of the larger projects scheduled to start spring 2023 is the replacement of the bridge deck across the I-90 Vantage Bridge. Since 2019, WSDOT has discovered over a dozen holes in the bridge deck requiring emergency repairs and lane closures. In 2020, three holes were discovered in one day. Over the past two years, emergency repairs to the bridge have resulted in multiple travel delays and a total of over 80 days of lane closures. The bridge was built in 1962 and the last time it received a major overhaul was in 1982. This work is schedule to be complete fall 2025. Travelers will need to plan for delays and consider alternate routes due to lane closures and traffic shifts during construction.
