The US 97 corridor has a history of severe and fatal collisions between Toppenish and Union Gap. In addition, the Yakama Nation as the highest pedestrian fatality rate in Washington State. In the fall of 2018, the Yakama Nation Tribal Council agreed with WSDOT’s plan to construct roundabouts on US 97 at McDonald & Becker Road and at Jones Road. Other improvements to this highway include traffic signing upgrades at Lateral 1, Progressive Rd and the SR 22 junction. WSDOT is dedicated to develop solutions for other intersections in the corridor in the future.
