The SR 542 Deming Corridor Study will explore about 4.5 miles of the state highway between the SR 9 junction at Nugents Corner and the SR 9 junction east of Deming.
This page of the online open house describes the road segments included in the analysis and shows some aerial images of the corridor.

Nugents Corner to the BNSF Railroad Crossing
SR 542 at Nugents Corner is a single lane roundabout intersection with SR 9 approaching from the north. The roundabout also allows for access to businesses adjacent to SR 542 at the southern end. There are striped pedestrian crossings on the west and east sides of the roundabout crossing SR 542. Pedestrians may also navigate through the commercial parking lot to the south.
One transit stop with a gravel pullout exists just east of the commercial access on the eastbound highway. The westbound transit stop is within a paved parking area which serves Bethany Chapel east of the roundabout junction. Pedestrians presumably navigate the shoulder of the roadway and commercial parking areas in order to approach the crossing opportunities at the roundabout.
From Nugents Corner, the road becomes a rural two lane highway with a posted speed limit of 55 mph just past milepost 10. There are no dedicated pedestrian or bicycle facilities although a wide shoulder of approximately 10 feet exists on both sides of the roadway until the at-grade railroad crossing.
The Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) 72x transit route follows SR 542 from the transit pullout at Nugents Corner until the intersection of Deming Road. Here, it turns east onto Deming Road and serves the community of Deming via this local road.
BNSF Railroad Crossing to Mitchell Road
SR 542 continues as a two lane rural highway until the at-grade railroad crossing just east of Finrud Road. For a short section at the crossing, speed change lanes are introduced which reduce the width of the highway shoulder. After the crossing, the highway returns to a rural two-lane configuration. Shoulder and center rumble strips are present along the roadway with guardrail at many locations. The posted speed in this section is 55 mph.
Road accesses to the highway in this section of SR 542 are intermittent and dispersed, with the majority leading to private driveways. A few local roads cross SR 542 at two way stop controlled intersections where stop signs are posted on local cross-streets to the highway. These include Smith Creek Road, Hillard Road, E 45th Dr, Macaulay Rd, and Pebley Rd among some others.
No pedestrian or bicycle facilities are available on this section of SR 542 apart from the shoulder, with an average width of around 10 feet.
The posted speed of the roadway decreases from 55 mph to 45 mph as SR 542 approaches the community of Deming and the intersection of Mitchell Road.
The intersection of Mitchell Road and SR 542 near Mount Baker High School is a two way stop controlled intersection with stop signs at Mitchell Rd. north and south of SR 542. This intersection has a center turn lane on SR 542 east and west of the intersection. The introduction of the center turn lane narrows the road shoulder from around 10 feet wide to 4 feet wide.
Deming – Mitchell Road to SR 9 Roundabout Junction at Valley Highway
The posted speed in this section of Deming until just east of Deming Road is 45 mph. After this point, the speed increases again to 55 mph until the roundabout junction. There are no pedestrian or bicyclist facilities available along SR 542 in this section apart from the existing roadway shoulder, which varies in width from 4 feet wide to 10 feet wide depending on the lane configuration.
While generally along SR 542 there is one travel lane in each direction, center turn lanes and right turn pockets have been introduced to facilitate safe turning movement into commercial businesses and other services. Parking for these services is located outside the roadway.
Generally, services and businesses are located on the south side of SR 542. However, the Deming Library is an important community center and is located across from the Nooksack Market Centre. Pedestrians and bicyclists attempting to access the Deming Library from the south must cross four vehicle travel lanes on the highway. There is no designated pedestrian crossing across SR 542 in this section of the roadway. The posted speed is 45 mph. Deming Road serves as an alternate parallel route to access services. This route may be more comfortable for pedestrians and bicyclists as it has a lower posted speed and less vehicle and freight traffic than SR 542. There are no pedestrian facilities or sidewalks available on Deming Road. Access to the Deming Library is not possible via Deming Road.
