Background
SR 3 is an important corridor through Mason County. It moves people and goods and connects rural communities to nearby cities. The posted speed limit near Mason Lake Road is 50 mph. Approximately 16,000 vehicles, 6.1% of which are trucks, pass through the intersection daily. This is according to 2023 WSDOT traffic counts.
Washington State has a strategic highway safety plan. It is called Target Zero. The goal is to reduce serious and fatal crashes on state highways to zero by the year 2030. The plan focuses on two aspects: crash reduction and crash prevention.
Conceptual drawing for proposed roundabout at SR 3 and Mason Lake Road

The proposed single lane roundabout has several features. It includes a raised shoulder on two sides of the intersection. It has a center island, splitter islands and shoulder curbing. These are drivable surfaces. This allows larger vehicles and emergency vehicles to access the roundabout.
The center island is 50 feet in diameter. It also features drivable curbing.
Construction of a single-lane roundabout is tentatively scheduled to begin summer 2026.
Funding
The roundabout project is funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program. The estimated cost to design and build the roundabout is $5.9 million. Cost and construction dates are subject to change.
