This page describe how stage 2a project work zones may affect travelers and residents during construction.
SR 161/North Meridian Avenue north of the Puyallup River
- In summer 2025, a temporary, illuminated walkway will be installed on the west side of SR 161/North Meridian Avenue between North Levee Road and Valley Avenue during construction of the new diverging diamond interchange.
The Puyallup River Bridge
- In 2026, the sidewalk on the east side of the Puyallup River Bridge will close temporarily to build a barrier protected shared use-path. The sidewalk on the west side will remain open during construction. The new shared-use path will be open to the public by 2027.

North Meridian Avenue south of the Puyallup River
- As early as fall 2026, construction crews will create and place signage for temporary pedestrian detours at the intersection of East Stewart Avenue and North Meridian Avenue. New sidewalks in this location will open to the public by 2027.
Other temporary pedestrian detours may be in place during construction. People using these routes should look out for, and always follow, detour signs.
New bridge, trail, embankment and interchange construction
Between spring 2025 and fall 2026, crews will build embankments for new expressway bridges and ramps, a new diverging diamond interchange, road improvements and portions of a new multi-use trail.
- Community members may experience more truck traffic on local roads as crews haul soil and other materials to work zones during this work.
- Community members in Puyallup will also see small and large construction equipment around project work zones, experience occasional lane closures and hear daytime noise as crews work.
Demolition of the old Puyallup River steel truss bridge
WSDOT will demolish the decommissioned Puyallup River steel truss bridge in fall 2025. The demolition will occur during the daytime. Crews will use heavy machinery to break down the old bridge.
- Community members can expect added noise as the bridge is dismantled and hauled away. The crews will preserve a portion of the historic bridge that will be placed on the spuyaləpabš Trail as a heritage marker.

SR 161/North Meridian Avenue
As soon as summer 2025, crews will build bypass lanes to the east of the interchange at SR 167 and SR 161/North Meridian Avenue allowing drivers to safely travel in both directions around project work zones.
- Most work will occur during the day, but travelers should expect temporary, nighttime lane closures of SR 161 and SR 167 between summer and early fall 2025 as the bypass is constructed.
- Once in use, the new bypass route will connect to SR 167 and North Levee Road until 2027. WSDOT will fully close SR 161/North Meridian Avenue between River Road and Valley Avenue over a single weekend before opening the new interchange to the public. The extended weekend closure will include advanced notice and a signed detour.
Puyallup River Bridge and North Levee Road
As early as summer 2026, WSDOT will build a new shared use path (spuyaləpabš Trail) along the Puyallup River Bridge and North Levee Road connecting to the Riverwalk Trail near North Meridian Avenue.
- Crews will require temporary evening lane closures to set work zone barriers on the Puyallup River Bridge.
- Advanced notice will be provided ahead of all closures.
East Stewart Avenue
Construction crews will widen North Meridian Avenue at the intersection with East Stewart Avenue in 2026 to create two through-lanes and a new left turn lane that will help improve traffic flow in the area.
- Drivers may experience temporary lane closures and temporary parking restrictions on North Meridian Avenue and East Stewart Avenue while crews widen the intersection.
SR 167
Crews will build a new bridge at Milwaukee Avenue East and widen SR 167 between SR 161/North Meridian Avenue and SR 410, including reconstruction of SR 512 on- and off-ramps.
- In summer 2026, traffic will shift onto the shoulders during bridge and roadway construction so crews can complete their work safely and minimize the effect on travelers.
- Drivers can expect one extended weekend closure of the SR 167 northbound offramp to westbound SR 512 in summer 2026 while crews install meters and rebuild the ramp.
- Drivers should expect additional temporary ramp closures on north and southbound SR 167 throughout the project.
- A single weekend closure of SR 161/North Meridian Avenue will temporarily limit access between SR 167 and SR 512 in Puyallup. Advanced notice and signed detours will be provided ahead of all closures.
SR 512 and Pioneer Way
Crews will install electrical equipment, new ramp meters and expand ramps on SR 512 and Pioneer Way between 2026 and 2027.
- Drivers can expect temporary lane and ramp closures as crews complete ramp improvements at this interchange.
- In spring 2026, drivers can anticipate up to four evening closures of SR 512 approximately between SR 167 and Pioneer Way while crews install new sign bridges.
- Advanced warning will be provided ahead of all closures.
SR 410
Crews will install new sign bridges on SR 410, requiring a two-night closure of the highway between SR 167 and Valley Avenue in summer 2026. Drivers can also expect temporary ramp closures through 2027 as crews complete roadway improvements. Advanced warnings will be provided ahead of all closures.
